100 Nude Ideas (41-60)

This week I'm responding to Nude & Happy's 100 Nude Ideas ("to increase nude time and nudist friends") - illustrated with my own photography. Over 15 years of nudity, spread across five installments. It all starts here.

#41 Hang and display your nakation pictures.

I'm an art photographer, so nakation or not, I do hang naked pictures I've taken (of myself) in my house. I pick ones that aren't overly explicit, because they need to be appropriate for General Audiences. But they're unmistakably naked. I know there's a question of authenticity involved in advertising a version of nudism that shies away from full exposure, but you can do an awful lot with the power of suggestion, while minimizing the risk to yourself in a culture of gymnophobia. I think that's a worthwhile compromise.

#42 Be a naked model.

This is basically my job. Sitting in for a nude art drawing class is a well-worn cliché among aspiring nudists - I've toyed with the idea myself, though I never got around to trying it. I like posing for a camera, though. It may be less meditative, but it's more dynamic. I like art that reflects scenes you might actually encounter in the world (though they may be rare), more than the abstract - i.e., naked people in some sort of a context, over lifeless nude bodies in a studio.

#43 Have a naked Christmas.

Unfortunately, this wouldn't fly with the rest of my family, but I did manage to do it in 2020 during self-imposed quarantine. Nevertheless, I always find some time to hang out naked during the holidays. I like to decorate the house, set up the tree, and even wrap gifts naked. If there's snow, I might even shovel the walkway or build a snowman - wearing nothing but boots and a pair of gloves!

#44 Feature in a Spencer Tunick installation.

This is another nudist bucket list cliché, albeit for good reason. I'd love to do it myself, but I haven't had the opportunity. I imagine that with the amount of people involved, it would be an interesting experience. However, Spencer Tunick isn't the end-all be-all of the nude art world. Being involved in any kind of nude art project (besides my own) would be incredible. I haven't often modeled for other photographers, but I did feature in some promotional materials for a nudist resort once!

#45 Go to a naked bowling event.

I've heard about these. And I have only myself to blame for not ever having been to one. I guess bowling isn't really a priority activity for me. It's indoors. It's social. People will probably be drinking. And as far as sports go, I don't find bowling to be especially thrilling. I'm surprised karaoke isn't on this list - that's another activity I've heard of people doing naked that doesn't especially interest me. I'd just as soon go hiking through the woods looking for a waterfall to skinny dip in. I prefer outdoor adventures to hanging out inside.

#46 Allow only nakedness on your boat.

I would have to have a boat first. I've been naked on my kayak, but I don't think it really counts when it's just you, and especially not if you're not enforcing the rule when other people use it. I think a similar case applies to things like backyard pools - or my bedroom, where "nudity is required" as per the sign. As far as gently pushing people to step outside their comfort zone, it's a fun idea. But I think it loses some of its appeal in practice. I prefer a friendly recommendation to a strict mandate.

#47 Go skinny-dipping.

I've done this more times than I can count. Even if you exclude swimming in the pool at a nudist resort. One time, I slipped off my speedo while swimming with a bunch of college coeds after a game of beach volleyball, and they all followed suit. It sounds outrageous, but it's true! Mostly, I'll find opportunities away from prying eyes. I only regret that I don't know more people (not necessarily nudists) who can enjoy this activity without making it overtly sexual.

#48 Have a walk on a beach naked at night.

I've gotten close to doing this a couple of times. Once, while camping on the beach (but we weren't alone). And another time, I was walking with my family on the beach at night, and I stripped naked to take a quick dip in the water. I just don't get to the beach often enough. I've spent lots of time walking the streets at night, though, in the quaint suburban neighborhood in which I used to live. It was a good outlet - if risky - during a time when I didn't get a lot of opportunities to be naked outdoors. But I learned to hate motion sensing porch lights. These days, the proliferation of surveillance cameras has just about killed this once harmless activity.

#49 Open the door naked to a delivery.

I have not done this, although I have been tempted to greet religious proselytizers this way. Opinions vary a great deal on whether this practice is problematic or perfectly fine. I think the stakes are relatively low, but it does veer into "exhibitionist" territory. I don't believe people have a "right" not to be exposed to the human body, any more than they have the right to dictate another person's state of dress when greeting them at their own home. That said, we do live in a gymnophobic culture. I don't want to upset anyone, or get into trouble. And I wouldn't want my behavior to reflect poorly on nudism in the mind of an uninitiated outsider.

#50 Happy Nude Year!

I like to ring in every new year in the nude. So don't invite me to a New Year's party unless you're okay with me being naked. Actually, as an introvert, I don't mind staying in. But if you want to get me out, I could be swayed by the promise of an opportunity to finally go streaking, after all these years of fantasizing about it. Barring that, a clothes-free or even an ABC party might be fun. One way or another, there has to be nudity involved. Even that one time I celebrated downtown, I was naked underneath my winter coat. When the clock struck midnight, I flashed my partner, on the street in the middle of a crowd. I don't think anybody else noticed. You'd be surprised what you can get away with when everybody's attention is distracted by something else.

#51 Work from home naked.

I don't have a conventional employment history, but I do a lot of work at home on my computer on a daily basis, and there's no reason for me to be any more dressed than I usually am around the house - which is to say, not at all. If you're lucky enough to be able to work from home, this is really a no-brainer if you're a nudist. In my case, sometimes I get to work naked out of the house, too, but that's only because some of my work involves being naked on camera.

#52 Go to a costume party as Adam.

This is a perennial nudist favorite. I haven't exactly worn it to a party, but I have "dressed up" as Adam before (and Eve, for that matter) for a photoshoot. One of my unfinished sewing projects is to construct a flesh-toned g-string with an imitation fig leaf stitched to the front, for minimal coverage without risk of full exposure. I think it would make for a cheeky swimsuit, or it could double as an Adam costume.

#53 Meditate naked.

While I can appreciate Eastern mysticism, I've never gotten into the habit of meditation. It takes a lot to quiet my hyperactive mind. Nevertheless, I have multiple photos of me sitting naked in the lotus position, just because it makes for an interesting picture. One time, I even did it in the middle of a gurgling stream! At any rate, my "spirituality" (such as it is) encompasses being naked outdoors while reflecting on the beauty and the tranquility of nature. I think that's close enough.

#54 Buy a house or a caravan in a nudist resort.

What nudist hasn't thought about owning a place on the grounds of a nudist camp? I know I have. I feel like this is a significant step beyond membership, though. I like the idea of having a place I can go to where I can relax naked, close to the action, while not worrying about textile neighbors. I just wonder how I'd feel living in a place where I couldn't indulge my impulse to pull out my camera and pose for some photos. Maybe when I get older, this might be an option.

#55 Play video games naked.

How else would you play them? For a nudist, a lot of these items are just normal occurrences. I'm just waiting for virtual reality to get to a point where I can simulate the experience of being naked in public, without the risk. I'm pretty sure you can already hang out with people in a 3D pseudo-space, without anybody even having to know you're not dressed (if you don't want them to). As for nudity in video games, I definitely think there should be more. I'm the kind of player who searches for nude mods and outfits my heroes in the skimpiest armor available.

#56 Go to a naked sauna.

I don't think saunas are very popular around here - they're not that common. I have been naked in a sauna at a nudist resort, though. On those cold, rainy weekends, sometimes it's the only place where you can get comfortable. That is, if the temperature in the sauna isn't too hot.

#57 Go on a naked camping trip.

If you ask me, all camping trips should be clothing optional. Unless it's just too cold. You're out in the wilderness; you're roughing it. It's natural to get naked when you're surrounded by nature. I just wish this mentality was common enough that I would encounter other naked adventurers outdoors, and not feel like I'm the only one. Even on trips when I can't stay naked (due to proximity to other people), I'm always looking for an opportunity to slip away from the crowd. Of course, when you go camping on the grounds of a nudist resort, it's all nude, all the time!

#58 Chill with good music naked.

As I said before, like with many other items on this list, when you're a nudist, this just becomes second nature. I've spent many hours listening to music naked. I've even spent a lot of time practicing my guitar nude. I like to listen to classic rock and blues, but one of my favorite contemporary artists is Miley Cyrus. I like her music, but I also like her rock 'n' roll spirit, pro-LGBT politics, and sex-positive attitude. She has a reputation for being "scandalous", but she's a performer. I actually think she's pretty down-to-earth. And, like me, she's not afraid to show off her body. "I'm completely naked but I'm making it fashion."

#59 Get to a naked yoga class.

I'm intrigued by the popularity of this trend, especially inasmuch as non-nudists may be contributing to its success. I haven't been to a class, as I'm not really into yoga, but it seems like it would be a great learning experience for textiles - on the comfort, naturalness, and perhaps surprising non-sexuality of social nudity. If only this approach could be applied to other activities like sports, fitness, and hey - gymnastics!

#60 Invite your best friend to spend a day at your nudist club.

I think nudists are sometimes in the habit of deluding themselves about the likelihood of other people in their lives being interested in nudism. When you're a nudist, it seems like the most natural thing in the world. But to a textile, it's got to appear pretty crazy. Still, that's no reason not to make the offer. You never know for sure - until you ask. I wasn't brave enough to go to a nudist camp myself until I asked someone to come with me who said yes. We were immediate converts. Later on, I was able to get my brother to join me on a couple trips. He's open-minded and sympathetic to the appeal of nudism, but I don't think he's committed to the lifestyle the way I am.

100 Nude Ideas (21-40)

This week I'm responding to Nude & Happy's 100 Nude Ideas ("to increase nude time and nudist friends") - illustrated with my own photography. Over 15 years of nudity, spread across five installments. It all starts here.

#21 Invite your friends to undress when coming to your place.

Isn't that what the Clothing Optional sign is for? I'm pretty solitary by nature, so I don't have friends that come over very often (they mostly live in other states, or on other continents). And this wouldn't really work when watching the kids (can you imagine? lol). But I always make a point, when the topic comes up in conversation, to espouse body positivity, and to defend people's freedom of dress, so that if anyone ever decides they want to do that, I'd hope they'd feel welcome to in my presence.

#22 Go to Burning Man.

I've actually done this! Incidentally, it was my first time being nude in front of strangers. Sadly, there weren't a lot of other fully nude people. But there were a ton of partially nude people. That was one of my favorite things about the festival. All in all, it was a great time. My only regret is losing my camera amid a throng of people after stripping nude to dance around the smoldering remains of the Man. A whole week's worth of out-of-this-world memories, gone. (Fortunately, I encountered a roving photographer during the week, who captured the image seen above).

#23 Plan your holiday with nudism in mind.

I'm actually doing this right now. I'm thinking about heading to a tropical beach for my next birthday (which is in the dead of winter), and my number one requirement is that I don't want to have to get dressed, at all. But it's not the first time I've planned a vacation with the expectation that I won't have to pack any clothes!

#24 Organize a clothing-optional BBQ.

This sounds like the dinner party idea, except out in the backyard. Which, to be honest, would be a lot more fun. Especially if you had a pool! But again, I'm not a social butterfly, and I don't know many nudist-friendly people. That said, I have given my friends and family an open invitation to hang out nude in my backyard - specifically. Unsurprisingly, nobody has taken me up on it.

#25 Negotiate nudist time with your local gym club.

It never fails to amuse me how the word "gym" - as in "gymnasium" (or "gymnastics") - comes from the Greek word for nudity. And yet, most people would be horrified by the suggestion of working out (especially in public) in the nude. I, on the other hand, do most of my exercising naked - whether at home on the treadmill, or hiking and swimming outdoors (as much as is possible). This is the first I'm hearing of nudist gym meets, though.

#26 Sleep naked.

This one is obvious to me, but I guess it would sound like a great idea if you didn't already do it. I can't remember when I started, but I do remember the first time I tried it as a kid. I was terrified of getting caught. Even in college, when I lived with a rommate, I was in the habit of slipping off my shorts after climbing into bed (and slipping them back on before climbing out in the morning). These days, I go straight from my bed to the bathroom, to the kitchen to have breakfast, without covering up (if I can).

#27 Live entirely naked for 2 full days (and 3 nights).

This is pretty much a typical weekend at nudist camp during the summer. Or half of a slow week at home. I couldn't even begin to guess how many times I've done it. I was naked at home all throughout the pandemic lockdowns in 2020, so I think I've got this fairly well covered.

#28 Get naked as soon as you come back home.

I do this nearly every time I step in the house (unless I'm bringing back guests, who are not likely to be nudists). Sometimes, I'm out of my clothes even before I put the groceries away! On a really good day, I'll have spent lots of time naked outdoors, driven home nude, and am already naked before I walk through the front door! (Well, the back door in that case). Maybe I should try leaving the house nude, and see if I can spend all day out, and make it back home without ever putting on clothes. I think that sounds like a fun challenge.

#29 Avoid textile beaches.

Honestly, I think this idea is kinda dumb. If you have a choice - absolutely, choose the nude beach. But they are few and far between, and as somebody who loves the beach, I'm not going to cancel beach time just because I can't be naked. Nor am I going to cancel plans to go swimming with people who aren't nudists, just because I won't be able to swim naked. Moreover, I'm not above getting naked on a textile beach - under the right circumstances.

#30 Organize naked hikes.

Would I love to find other people in my area who like to hike naked? Sure! After all, there's strength in numbers. As an artist, I've thought a lot about how much fun it would be to go out into the woods and shoot nature nudes with somebody other than myself for company, assistance, and collaboration. But again, I feel like an oasis of nudism in a desert of textiles. The only people I know who are nudist-friendly are the people I've met at nudist resorts, and they don't live anywhere close to me.

#31 Stop buying swimsuits.

Okay, I have to disagree with this one right out. I know the idea is to force yourself into the position of having to swim naked, but the actual reality is more likely to be losing out on opportunities to swim with textile friends. And I love swimming! But, even aside from that, swimsuits are my favorite type of clothing. It's the closest I can get to being naked among textiles, without anyone making a fuss. And it's the closest textiles themselves will get to engaging in social nudity, without thinking twice about it. I think this is an example of nudists letting perfect be the enemy of the good. Swimsuits are awesome! I've got drawers full of them, and yet I still find myself buying more every year.

#32 Participate in World Naked Gardening Day.

As somebody who already likes to garden naked, this is easy enough to do. I actually think the first Saturday in May is a little early - the weather is still pretty cool, and it's just the start of the season, so nothing's really grown in yet. I'd prefer a Naked Gardening Day sometime in June or July. But, as the most well-known naked holiday (to my knowledge), it's a prime opportunity to broadcast your enjoyment of nude recreation to family, friends, and strangers alike - all of which I've done. I like to get out and celebrate this day whenever I can, if for no other reason than to honor all the years I've spent it cooped up indoors.

#33 Create a nudism library.

This is a neat idea, but I think it requires a considerable investment. I definitely have some nudist materials on a bookshelf in my home, but even after all the years I've been involved in the lifestyle, I don't think I have enough to call it a "library". That would be an awesome thing to visit, though. I'm assuming, of course, that the dress code is clothing optional.

#34 Create a nudist friendly AirBnB.

Helping out nudist travelers, and maybe making some new friends to hang out with naked (even if only temporarily), might sound like a good idea on paper. But the logistics of creating an AirBnB? I don't have the space (and don't even own the space I have). Besides, I don't really want strangers staying in my home. Nudist or not. My home is my sanctuary.

#35 Start a blog on nudism.

I don't technically have a "nudist blog", but I do have a blog where I can (and frequently do) talk about nudism - you're reading it right now. So I think that counts. It's just that I talk about other stuff, too. Stuff that doesn't always mix well with nudism. If I were to start a blog just about nudism, I think I would get bored quickly, and struggle too much against the impulse to write freely on controversial issues that involve nudity. That's why I've chosen to blog without limits here.

#36 Live entirely naked for one week.

As should be well-established by now, I've done this - many times over. The first time was on the grounds of a nudist camp, during my first weeklong nakation. I specifically made a point not to wear anything for the whole week, which culminated in a naked volleyball tournament.

#37 Go to the hotel gym naked.

Although I appreciate the sentiment, I think this probably counts more as exhibitionism than nudism. I would consider doing it only if I thought I could pull it off without getting caught (and these days, security cameras are everywhere). That said, hotels are like a home away from home - it only makes sense that you would want to be comfortable. And when there are amenities attached - like vending machines, laundry, gym, pool, lounge, bar, or even a restaurant - the possibilities thrill the imagination. I'd like to see more nudist resorts like this, as an alternative to the "rustic campground" model.

#38 Do your house chores naked.

(And yard chores). As a nudist, this is a no-brainer. Like sleeping naked. And it really does make them more fun. Sweeping, running the vacuum, mopping the kitchen, washing dishes, cooking, cleaning up your room, taking out the trash, dusting, painting, mowing the lawn, raking the leaves, building shelves, moving furniture, cleaning out the car - I've done all of these chores naked, and I'm struggling to think of a single one that would be improved by wearing clothes.

#39 Play a tennis match naked.

Well, you've got me on this one. I have not played tennis naked, and not for lack of opportunity, either - I'm just not that interested in tennis. Volleyball, on the other hand... However, I did play table tennis once at a nudist resort. It was a lot of fun. And there are a number of times that I've set up a net and played badminton naked in my backyard.

#40 Join a naturist event at your local swimming pool.

This would be awesome, but my local swimming pool (which is outdoors, by the way) would never go for it. I can't even wear my favorite swimsuits, because their rules are too conservative (girls, on the other hand, can wear whatever they like). I almost attended a nudist swim meet once, but there was a scheduling conflict, and I wasn't able to make it. Maybe I should try again. I may never have used a hotel gym naked, but I did swim naked in a non-nudist hotel pool once (it was a slow week at the hotel). Does that count?

100 Nude Ideas (1-20)

While browsing the web, I found this list of 100 ideas "to increase nude time and nudist friends", on the naturist blog Nude & Happy. I thought it would be fun to go through the list and check off each idea I've tried. There's a healthy mix of practical advice, fantastical pipe dreams, and a few left-field suggestions.

To make things even more interesting, I decided to illustrate the list with 100 of my own photographs! I made considerable effort to find images relevant to each item, but I had to use a little bit of artistic license here and there. In the end, I think it makes for a fascinating look back over more than 15 years of taking nude self-portraits. Let's begin!

#1 Join a nudist club.

I probably should do this. I think it's safe to say that I'm committed to nudism. But I have an anti-establishment streak (you don't need a membership card to be a nudist). And not a lot of money. Aside from a newsletter and the possibility of discounted rates, what are AANR and TNS actually doing for me? It's not clear. And what else would I be funding? I like the idea of supporting local resorts, but do I want to be tied down to a single location? Especially when I can only visit a few times a year? Plus, sometimes you have to jump through hoops ("you must be sponsored!"), and are then expected to volunteer to work whenever you visit. I'm comfortable being a freelance nudist.

#2 Be naked at home.

This is where it all started for me - in my own bedroom. Over the years, I've gradually expanded my range, to the whole house, and even out into the yard. Nowadays, I'm naked at home every single day. When it's cold, I might throw on a robe, but that's it. The only time I wear clothes at home (other than during fashion photoshoots) is when there are guests over. Living in a truly clothing optional world is a nice fantasy, but in my experience, finding textiles who are comfortable around casual nudity is very rare.

#3 Hike naked.

I do this a lot. There's a question of whether to do it surreptitiously, or to be out and proud, and arguments to be made for each approach. I support the latter on principle, but more often practice the former, out of an abundance of caution. You never know who you're going to run into, and I don't want to bother anyone. I would also hate for my behavior to reflect poorly on nudism in the mind of a stranger. And, quite simply, I don't want to get in trouble. So I try my best to balance my freedom, with respect for the differing viewpoints of others (even when that same respect is not given to me in return).

#4 Participate in a naked run.

I've done this, on the grounds of a nudist resort. Not as thrilling as streaking in public through a crowd of textiles (I assume), but it was still fun. I like activities that draw a younger, fitter crowd. I'd do it again.

#5 Subscribe to a naturist magazine.

I've considered doing this. But I'm not familiar enough with what's out there to know if there's one worth subscribing to. I've read some scans of some older magazines that I thought were interesting, and it was more than just trip reports and paid advertising. But nowadays you can easily find good discussions and nudist photography online. Still, I'd like to give it a try.

#6 Speak to your friends about naturism.

I've done this. About 15 years ago I got into nudism, and it didn't take me long to "come out" to my inner circle (informing the outer circle would come later). To my knowledge, none of them have adopted the lifestyle to any significant degree (aside from my partner, thankfully), but they don't think any less of me for being a nudist. Which is no less than I expected, because I'm not in the habit of making friends with the sort of person who would.

#7 Leave your naturist magazines on your coffee table.

I suppose I'd have to subscribe to one first. I like this idea in theory, but you have to consider who comes to your house. Do you really want to be the person accused of exposing somebody's kids to "nudie mags"? I have nudist-friendly materials elsewhere in my house, that are accessible without being demanding. The coffee table is an invitation. The bedroom or study is a better place for those kinds of things.

#8 Organize a naked dinner.

There are going to be a lot of items on this list that I fail by default, just because I'm not much of a social butterfly. The problem is, I don't even organize clothed dinners! And inviting people to my house isn't really my idea of a good time. But even if it were, my family and friends aren't nudists. Nobody would show up, and I'd look like a fool for even suggesting it. I think this one is better relegated to fantasy. At least until I make more local nudist friends (and I'm not holding my breath for that).

#9 Go on a nakation.

Now this is one that I can say, without a doubt, that I've done. At least once a year, and usually more frequently than that. I'm always looking for opportunities to get naked, whether I'm traveling or staying close to home. But I've spent lots of weekends (and at least one whole week) deliberately vacationing at a nudist resort, too.

#10 Start a non-landed club.

I can't see this one happening. Not until I get those imaginary local nudist friends. You see, I feel like an oasis in a desert of textiles, and social networking is not my strong suit. I have attended meetings for a non-landed club, though - albeit in a different town. I like that their activities are more varied than what you usually see at resorts, which seem to attract an older demographic. If I were to start my own club, it would be about going to parks (moreso than people's houses, or finagling "nude time" at businesses - which I don't see flying around here), and taking the opportunity to create nude art. That would be cool.

#11 Go on a naked cruise.

I don't think I'm old enough for that yet. If I were interested in going on a cruise, I would definitely love to go on a naked one. I think I'd prefer to keep my feet on solid ground, though. And after COVID, cruises are definitely not high on my list of vacation prospects.

#12 Subscribe to this blog and share it.

What is this, thinly-veiled self-advertisement? I don't subscribe to blogs lightly, but I'm sharing it here, aren't I? :-p

#13 Hang a clothing-optional sign.

I've had one hanging up for years. I even put a "nudity required" sign on my bedroom door. Nobody respects it (unfortunately), but it's right out in the open, and it gets the point across. (And it gives me an ironclad excuse in case anybody walks in on me - "you were warned!").

#14 Ask for permission to get naked while at friends'.

I'm more of a "read the atmosphere" kind of person. And I don't know a lot of people who are comfortable in "mixed company". I'm also not very social, so I don't spend a lot of time at other people's houses. There have been occasions in the past when I've been nude in the presence of textile friends and family, but it's not often, and it's usually on my turf.

#15 Drive naked.

I do this on occasion. If you pick the right circumstances, you can minimize your chances of causing a scandal. I mostly do it at night on long drives on the interstate, but also in the summer when I've just come from swimming. As long as you keep a cover-up on hand for unexpected emergencies, obey all traffic laws, and avoid things like manned tollbooths and drive-through windows, you should be fine. After all, when was the last time you noticed what somebody in another car was wearing?

#16 Live entirely naked for 24 hours.

As a homebody, I've done this countless times. During 2020, I took advantage of pandemic lockdowns to do this for over 365 days in a row! But the first time was when I was new to nudism. My folks were out of the house on an overnight trip, so I resolved to spend the entire day utterly without clothes. From the night before, through breakfast, lunch, and dinner, until the morning after. It was exhilarating!

#17 Participate in a WNBR.

I want to! But they're too few and far between. And just when I was ready to make the trip, COVID happened. I still hope to do it someday soon. In the meantime, I've been attending "underwear bike rides" closer to home. It might not be the same, but it's pretty close. I'm still riding in a crowd through an urban city center - wearing only a thong!

#18 Garden naked.

I spend all kinds of time out in my garden naked, including doing as much yard work as possible in the nude. In fact, that's how my neighbor found out I'm a nudist! The house had been vacant (which is why I was caught off guard), and I wasn't aware that she had moved back in. Thankfully, she wasn't upset, but was in fact quite friendly. So my habits haven't changed.

#19 Participate in nudist forums.

Been there, done that. I enjoy discussing issues related to nudism, with other like minds. But I have also experienced a lot of judgment, stereotyping, and discrimination from nudists based on the fact that I'm sex-positive, and that I also enjoy erotic art. So I've distanced myself a little bit from that community online. I still talk to nudists about nudism on social media, but I don't seek them out as much I used to anymore.

#20 Participate in World Naturism Day.

There are so many unofficial nude holidays out there - I never even heard of this one! How do you make one stick? Regardless, the trouble with these holidays is that they don't give you enough of an excuse to risk an indecent exposure charge. I'll engage in nudism both at home and abroad on any given Tuesday. So what makes these days special? Perhaps the key is to focus less on observance and more on awareness - to use these holidays to spread the word to family and friends and anonymous strangers alike. I've definitely done that before.

The Nekkdel Test

I'm not sure if I'm shooting myself in the foot by saying this, or if, on the other hand, drawing attention to it will generate more interest, but in reading my old posts on nudism, it occurs to me that perhaps there is need for a variation of the Bechdel test relating to discussions of nudism and sexuality.

I'm a nudist. So I've written a lot about nudism. But most of those posts address the tenuous relationship (or, more accurately, the suspicion of a relationship) between nudism and sex (often in the form of exhibitionism).

In my defense, I'm also an exhibitionist. And an erotic artist and philosopher. So these are topics that interest me. And, at the risk of being accused of "courting" controversy, controversial subjects are, by their very nature, intriguing in a way that mundane topics are not.

Some people are afraid to broach controversy. For the most part, I am not. I'm sure there is utility in writing sanitized nudist travel blogs, but let's be honest; resort reviews don't typically make for terribly gripping reading.

There are the usual subjects that are repeatedly picked up and batted around by nudists, but what I mainly have to add to the conversation is my unconventional perspective as a sex-positive activist, on the subject of how our attitudes (not our behaviors, but our attitudes) impact the reputation of nudism (especially online).

My blog is not a nudist blog because most of what I write is not about nudism. However, I do resent (a little bit) that my blog will never be considered a nudist blog, because I think what I have to add to the conversation on nudism is fairly unique, and rather worthwhile. In my not so humble opinion.

But, nudists get upset when you mix the subjects of sex and nudism together, because it tends to reinforce problematic (and largely inaccurate) stereotypes about nudism in the public mindset. Yet I always seem to be talking about nudism in relation to our sexual attitudes (which, it should be noted, is not the same as talking about the proverbial "sex on the beach").

So perhaps what I need, as I alluded to earlier, is a variation of the Bechdel test. Call it the "Nekkdel" test. The intended result of applying this test would be to generate more discussion of nudism that desexualizes the topic, which would probably be a net gain for nudism. Here's how I would frame the test:

A discussion (written or verbal) passes the Nekkdel test if it broaches the topic of nudism*, without mentioning sex (including, but not limited to, public sex, erections, and exhibitionism).

*Alternatively, the scope of this test could be broadened to include all discussions of nudity, not specifically nudism, to identify those discussions that are essentially "nudist kosher". Although particularly in this case, I don't think there should be any negative judgment associated with failing the test, because it's perfectly okay to talk about nudity - as distinguished from nudism - in a sexual context.

Though they may be few and far between, I do think I have one or two posts in the 12 or so years I've been blogging that would pass this test. But I'm not sure I'm brave enough to check...
