Vote for Democracy

To my audience in the United States, please vote. Our democracy depends on it.

I know that politics can be dull, hard to follow, and often divisive. Under normal circumstances, the two parties we're stuck with tend to seem more alike than different. I spent much of my adult life identifying as a conscientious non-voter, so I get it. But these aren't normal circumstances. Not only is the current administration corrupt and incompetent to an unprecedented degree, but it's attacking our Constitutional rights, and indeed the very foundation of our democracy.

Immigration raids. Concentration camps. Data centers. Crypto scams. The price of gasoline. Gutting social services. The rising cost of health care. Preventable epidemics. Deregulating food safety. Censoring the media. Stealing taxpayer money to fund vanity projects. Sacrificing our natural resources to Big Industry, amid an escalating climate crisis. All the lies! Sabotaging our elections. Dismantling the separation of powers. Compromising the courts. Weaponizing the justice system. Demolishing the White House. Misusing the Presidential pardon. Unilaterally starting a war of choice in the Middle East, with devastating economic repercussions for the entire world. Threatening our allies. Colluding with our enemies. And I haven't even mentioned the Epstein Files coverup! The list of grievances just goes on and on and on and on...

Although we can't vote out the President in this midterm election, there is still much at stake. The MAGA movement appears to be cracking under the pressure of its universally unpopular Christian nationalist agenda. Our Republican representatives in Congress refuse to hold the administration accountable for its numerous crimes against the law, our Constitution, and humanity. But if we can vote enough progressive Democrats into office, we can start to turn the tide.

Make no mistake, this will only be the beginning of a long period of reconstruction. But it could be the start of an exciting transformation. We, the people, have the power to guide this country into a future greater than it has ever seen before. To re-assert our rights, and make sure the government gets back to doing what we created it for - public service, not exploiting the populace for the benefit of ultra-rich campaign donors.

But to do this, we need YOUR vote. Don't sit this one out (or the next one, or the one after that). Let the crooks at the top know where you stand. Because they WILL take your silence as consent. And the only thing evil needs to triumph, is for good people to do nothing. So do something. Get out there and make your voice heard!

I hope to see you at the polls this Erection Day (or sooner, if you can swing it). Nothing would make me happier.

I am Canadian, and I understand the importance of voting. You have every right to defend democracy and to fight for your rights and for the restoration of a global social order. This administration is not only harming its own country; it is destabilizing democracies worldwide—not to mention the deaths weighing on its conscience. I hope your fellow citizens will heed the call and bring this appalling, arrogant, and disrespectful administration to its senses.

    1. Me too. It's crazy that I should find myself in this position, trying to push other people who are just like I used to be, to see the importance of voting. But this really is an unprecedented situation in this country.

That said, I don't know what it's like elsewhere, but we have a real crisis of civic responsibility in the US. For all that we've internalized that "it's your duty to vote", it's almost like we bend over backward to make it an undesirable activity.

You can't find good information. Politicans lie all the time. We don't even make Election Day a national holiday. We make voting optional, and opt to just shame people for not doing it. And then there's the money pouring into politics that's fucking up the whole system. We're in critical condition, on life support, we've got every disease in the manual. I just hope we can turn things around.

I'm not mad at tech CEOs for wanting to exploit the masses - that's their prerogative. I'm not even that mad at politicans for succumbing to greed and letting themselves be paid off. Again, it's primal instinct. And I really shouldn't be mad at the public for falling for all the tricks these criminals use to distort reality. It's not the average voter's fault.

But I AM mad at them, because they're not smart enough to see through it. We've got jackals at the top, sheep at the bottom, and I don't know how to fix it if you can tell a person the truth straight to their face, and that's either not good enough to convince them, or they ARE convinced but they're still too damn lazy or absorbed in scrolling TikTok to do anything about it.

I just gotta keep telling myself, the wind is shifting. And it's always darkest just before dawn.

    2. I don't think you grasp the full extent of the censorship and disinformation in the United States. Broadcast and print media are censored at the highest level, and anyone who speaks out against the Trumpist narrative faces immediate backlash. No one is immune to the rhetoric that has been put in place. America is now the most hated country in the world—far surpassing Russia, China, and North Korea. Thanks to Trump, the far right has a voice everywhere, and the consequences are disastrous.
